* World's Largest Landfill Closes The most infamous landfill in the United States closed Thursday (March 22, 2001) after 50 years of accepting a growing amount of New York City's garbage. Fresh Kills on Staten Island, where barges have lined up around the clock to dump up to 14,000 tons of waste every day, was once a natural area of meadows, marshlands and wetlands, named by the early Dutch settlers Fresh Kills, which means fresh streams. Still surrounded by some of the original ecosystem, the landfill now contains four enormous mountains of refuse. Fresh Kills and the Great Wall of China are the only two human constructions visible from outer space. Reprint by permission.

Sustainable World
'The Complete Idiot's Guide to Saving the Environment,' by Greg Pahl. A comprehensive guide to the ways an average citizen can make every day Earth Day. We learn how the environment got in this condition and how we can improve it by reducing, reusing, and recycling at home, at work, and everywhere else. But the issue of "the environment" isn't a simple one, and this book also addresses less obvious aspects like the influence of TV, over consumption, overpopulation, sprawl, social injustice, corporate subsidies, factory farming and many other factors whose links to our current ecological dilemmas tend to be overlooked. The book suggests groups and organizations to join or to go to for information. "...our global environment is made up of systems within systems within systems. And they all form an interconnected whole that has been described by some as the Web of Life." Reprint by kind permission.
